Mik Kersten (Tasktop Technologies)

Abstract:

Mylyn has changed the way developers work. This talk provides both an overview of the technology and a series of demos that will help newcomers get started. For seasoned users, the demos provide some quick overviews of new features and best practices.

The theme of the talk is the idea that focus and flow are key to creative work, and that tool support can facilitate focus and help us maintain flow, dramatically increasing our productivity. The talk overviews some of the motivations and foundations behind Mylyn's task-focused interface, including the split between our brains' semantic and episodic memory systems. After that, things get more concrete with several demos of Mylyn 3.0, followed by a showcase of the tools that make up the Mylyn ecosystem, including open source connectors as well as commercial tools such as the SpringSource Tool Suite and Tasktop.

Nice. One minor nit: the recorded sound of the keyboard is driving me crazy. Better production values next time, please. :-)

I like the idea, but a few things about human nature that are a miss here.
First of all you are probably classically phyc trained.
You are constantly using the phyc idiom "we".

Who/what is "we"?
There is no "we", it's a generality. I'm not part of we, I'm me.
Everyone is a different being.
Sure there are similarities and common thing in man, but "behaviors" are not some static thing.
Everyone has levels of competency and abilities, etc., that differ.
You can not use your self, or any one individual as a metric for such things.

A lot of the things you talk about in the introductions might not even be problems/issues for people.
A lot of which you talk about can be handled with discipline, and creating good environments for programming.
I disagree in that you can't be in the "zone" all the time (at least when needed).
You are there when you just agree too it.
As in your example when doing something with sports, etc., what makes the difference in a star/pro/top athlete (or muscian, etc.) is the ability to focus.
Just look at the face of one and can see the intense concentration.

You can be as focused as you want to be. It's as simple as a decision to be.

Also it's a catchy name and idea. But is there really such a thing as "speed of thought"?
You imply there is some metric you can compare to the speed of light, sound, or some other physical wavelength.

Anyway, by patterning what people are clicking on and displaying only what they are working on recently, etc., isn't that in essence just enforcing more discipline anyhow?

I think it's a great tool. But drop the phyc stuff.
Instead use user feedback of competent and experienced programmers as sort of a "focus group".
After all, that is your target audience right?

I've found this webinar quite informative and professional. There are some disclosures which provide ideology of Mylyn, very important for newbie.
This is really programme approch.
Best regards,
Barry

Indeed this is a major step towards 'the single window' concept, by putting Tasks as a first class UI besides Files, besides the history and context of those tasks. The Webinar is very well done. Will try it for our ADempiere project in SourceForge that many of us base on Eclipse as our IDE.
