Most people who know OSGi are familiar with it as a modularity solution. Surprisingly, if you look at the major app servers using OSGi they all but ignore the Service Layer. However the OSGi Service Layer is a crucial part of writing well decoupled software. Services simplify object oriented programing because they significantly reduce the coupling in a system. However, services are usually understood as being heavy-weight communications-based services as in SOA. Ten years ago, OSGi introduced an in-VM service oriented programming model that provides most of the SOA benefits at virtually zero runtime cost. OSGi combines strong modularity with well-defined, dynamic services. In R4.2, with the addition of Service Hooks, the OSGi service model will become symmetric. It will then support discovery of clients waiting for services as well as providers registering services. This dynamic model works surprising well in a large number of real world use cases. This session will explore why a symmetric service oriented programming model is important and can significantly reduce the complexity of developing large complex systems.

When reusing existing plugins for something innovative, you're likely to do things the original plugin author has not anticipated. This typically brings about some kinds of compromise:

• You adjust your requirements to what the reused plugins provide. Thus you settle for a different product than you intended.
• Or, you refrain from reuse but develop everything from scratch, settling for much lower productivity.
• Or, you apply some brute force method (like copy&paste) to get your job done, but then you settle for a brittle design, that is a pain to maintain.

This discussion will focus on the more advanced reporting features found in the BIRT Report Designer including report customization using expressions and scripting, building reports with re-use in mind using libraries and templates, and internationalization of report elements. We will cover the use of scripting in various parts of your report building process including a scripted data set, adding scripting to report and chart elements, as well as using scripting in expressions and events and how to access external Java classes. We will also cover reusable report templates and library components and will discuss the Internationalization of report elements in BIRT.

The Jetty HTTP server and servlet container project has been a successful open source project since 1995. The core Jetty project has now moved to the Eclipse Foundation and is improving its already good relationship with OSGi projects. This talk will be a short introduction to the Jetty project, followed by an overview of the move: what's changing, what staying the same and what's new in the Servlet 3.0 release. A significant proportion of the time will be allocated to Q & A, as we would like to receive feedback and suggestions from the eclipse community.

The Swiss Federal Railway and NASA team up to present how Eclipse RCP has made an impact on technical solutions for operations of railroads and robots.

SBB Infrastruktur operates the railway network with the highest utilization in the world: every day 9,000 trains travel on routes with an overall length of 3,000 km. From the beginning, the Eclipse IDE was used as the development platform - Eclipse RCP is the foundation of the RCS user interfaces. The first part of this talk is an Eclipse consumer story with a strong technical focus on railroad networks as well as some Eclipse RCP aspects of the project.

Since Eclipse 3.0, NASA has used the Rich Client Platform to build software tools to operate the Mars Exploration Rovers. The second part of this talk will give an overview of the many new projects that are enabled by the Eclipse platform and related technologies. We will discuss how NASA has used many Eclipse projects in its software tools including RCP, EMF, GEF, GMF, CDO, OSGi-ReST and the SWT-OpenGL binding. See how Eclipse is helping us explore worlds beyond our home planet.

In order to be the next generation platform for pervasive, component-based applications and tools, Eclipse e4 needs to adapt to the many environments in which it will run. In this talk, we will highlight the limitations of Platform Resources today, and explain how e4 will address these:

• Physical project nesting
• Symbolic links and other kinds of aliases
• Scaling up
• Becoming more asynchronous
• Remote development

We will especially focus on the core concepts in resources and dive into proposed API changes. After the talk, attendees will understand the big picture of e4 resources, how to apply it to their environments and where it may be interesting for them to contribute.

The CDT celebrates its 7th anniversary in June 2009. It's been quite a journey and we've learned a lot on what to do and what not to do to build a community that can keep the project running for this long.

This talk takes a trip down memory lane presenting the history of the CDT, the decisions we faced, the choices we made and whether they worked or not, and what we would have done differently. The hope is that these open source life lessons are helpful for others who are embarking down this journey as well, or are stuck in the quagmire of a bad project environment and are looking for a way to get out.

This talk also gives some insight into the culture of the CDT project and, for those who have been lurking for years, to show that we're not bad people and it won't hurt to contribute.
